Intel and Indian Media

Intel is one tech company which has used the Indian media for all the evil purposes. I remember the advertisement which showed a middle class family which brings a computer ‘powered by an Intel processor’ for the little gal. who uses the computer and perhaps checks out Encarta on it and she goes on to become a doctor leading to the transformation of the entire home into a high class apartment.

Ok. The girl might be super intelligent. But, how can Intel claim that a Pentium 4 processor can help kids with their homework and studies when it is the software which is supposed to handle all the interaction with the computer user. And I am pretty sure, an AMD processor would be as capable if not more to run educational programs on the computer.

From my experience, most Indian families purchasing a personal computer (even if they are powered by the Intel Pentium 4 Processor) end up using it as a showpiece or a gaming machine after a couple of weeks. No one uses it for the reasons they bought it for. Like my cousin practically ate up my grandpa’s mind asking for a machine coz he wanted to practice C++ for his 12th class boards on it. I suggested that he take an old Celeron 300 MHz CPU lying at my place- and no sir, he wanted a brand new Compaq machine to do his coding.

The result, I see him wasting time playing World of Warcraft on the same machine which was bought in for C++ programming. So much for having a Pentium 4 processor in your computer to help your kids become super intelligent grown up individuals. Buy a Playstation if you want to play games, buy an AMD if you really need a PC for some practical purposes. Don’t buy a Pentium 4 processor just because Intel tells you to do so!

I decided to air my opinion on Intel processors after I read this statement from an Intel senior representative during the announcement of the company’s plans to launch a Rs. 10,000 PC in India:

“We are working on the sub-Rs 10,000 PC and expect it to be commercially available by the end of this financial year. The PC will enable India to become one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world.”

Wow. A Rs. 10,000 PC would on its own help India to become ‘one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world’. God bless my soul.
