What next? A Sports Channel from Sahara?
1 Comment Published by sushubh March 1st, 2006 in News Channels in India, Sports on Indian TelevisionEveryone who watches a lot of television would notice the number of news channels, which have cropped up in the recent times. CNN IBN came because Rajdeep Sardesai probably had some issues with Prannoy Roy. Times Now came because I am not sure but it looks like the Times Group needed more place to advertise their crap.
I read somewhere that India now boasts of more than 30 news channels (Regional and National). This is a huge number considering there is not much news originating to please all these channels. This has probably resulted in the phenomena of ‘news creation’ where these news channels would make news out of anything and everything.
What I wanted to discuss here was the current India England Test Series. Nimbus seems to have collaborated with Sahara Group this time and as a result, the match is coming on guess what? Sahara One. This makes me believe that we would soon see a launch of a brand new Sports Channel from the Sahara Group! Cricket has immense power and money, which would make Sahara massively interested.
They have spent a lot of money in sponsoring the Indian team… Now, it looks like the time to get back some of it.
This further reminds me of the origination of the sports channel we have here in India. Cricket has already resulted in the formation of at least two news channels namely DD Sports and Zee Sports. No one watches them now. The World Cup led to the launch of Ten Sports, which now has only WWE and Gamer TV worth watching. BCCI also has expressed their interest in launching their own Cricket Channel!
Why not? If kids can have a channel dedicated to Cartoons, women can have a channel dedicated to fights between Saas and Bahu… A cricket channel sounds like a more interesting concept. It remains to be seen however, how many people would be interested in watching more sports channel with minimal content worth watching.

The article was worth a read, but i concieve that it has been interspersed with several inconsistencies, which i deem far from fact. Rajdeep Sardesai is an entreprenuer in every sense of the word, an individual venerated across the fourth estate and beyond. CNN IBN is amongst the few indian news channels, which could claim susbstance as it’s forte’s. His ventures have been the fruit of relentless endeavours, and incessant travails. To degrade his commendable efforts to a travesty is but a ruthless attack on the very spirit that drives journalism across this nation. Fine, CNN IBN may not be BBC, but it’s a channel that I’d like to be seen watching.
Guess what i just scrolled up the page to check out the next statement i wanted to contradict and noticed that this post of yours is over an year back. No wonder i found it hard to recall the India England test series. Well, i dont think i’ve got anything more to blog about. Guess the joke’s on me now huh ??? :)
